Information for Medical Students

Information on 2007 UW-GCRC Medical Student Summer Research Support.

About the GCRC

The University of Wisconsin-General Clinical Research Center (UW-GCRC) is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), UW Hospital and Clinics Authority, UW School of Medicine and Public Health, and UW Foundation. The UW-GCRC has existed at the UW Medical School for 20 years. Its base of operation is a 12-room inpatient/outpatient and a 5-bay outpatient treatment area of UW Hospital and Clinics for adult clinical research. The UW-GCRC also supports pediatric clinical research in the UW Children's Hospital and Meriter Hospital. The UW-GCRC supports clinical research by providing faculty investigators with nursing and dietary assistance, sample processing capability, access to equipment, and funding of research-related hospital costs for study subjects. The center also provides statistical assistance in study design, data management and analysis support.

Summer Research Program

We are currently offering our 18th annual program of summer research support to medical students. The purpose of this support is to facilitate clinical research projects and to provide clinical research experience for medical students interested in research careers. Pending the availability of funds, approximately four students will receive a fully-funded stipend of $400.00 per week for a minimum of eight to a maximum 12 weeks of research work this summer. Each student must work under a UW-GCRC faculty investigator on an NIH-supported study that is active at the GCRC.

Application Process

Students who have completed their first, second or third year of medical school and are in good academic standing qualify for the program. Students who wish to apply for the program should go to the GCRC website at http://www.medsch.wisc.edu/uwgcrc/med.htm to access the list of active investigators and their research interests. Students then initiate contact with a UW-GCRC investigator to discuss their proposed role and duties. Working with the investigator, the student should complete the application form (available on the website). The application along with all supporting materials should be sent in hard copy form to Lynne Cleeland, Room 4119 HSLC, 750 Highland Ave. The application deadline is Thursday, March 1, 2007.

The Medical Student Research Committee will review all applications and select students for support from those submitted. Awards will be announced by mid-March. Those applicants not selected for the GCRC Program will be considered for Shapiro Summer Research Awards if support is approved and matched equally by the sponsoring department. Students selected to receive support will be expected to present their research projects at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health 's Annual Medical Student Research Fall Forum.

For more information or assistance, contact Paulette Sacksteder at 263-3271, pasacksteder@wisc.edu, (GCRC Office) or Lynne Cleeland, 4119 HSLC, lmcleela@ wisc.edu (Office of Academic Affairs).
