Karen Palmersheim is an Epidemiologist and Director of the Tobacco Surveillance and Evaluation Program. She holds a Ph.D. in Social Welfare and an M.S. in Epidemiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Palmersheim’s background encompasses applied research, teaching in academic and community settings, and clinical practice. David Ahrens is a Researcher at the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Coordinator of the Wisconsin Population Health Fellowship Program. He received an M.S. in Industrial Relations (Labor Economics) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. For the Surveillance and Evaluation Program, David conducts research, provides training and technical assistance, and consults on matters of public policy. Kim is a master’s student in the UW department of Population Health Sciences, and is also a Project Assistant with the Tobacco Surveillance and Evaluation Program. She completed a B.S. in molecular biology at Humboldt State University in California and an M.S. in genetics at the UW. She is interested in genetic and chronic disease epidemiology, and has most recently published a trends report on Adult Smoking in Wisconsin, 1990-2006.

Carrie Hinterthuer is currently enrolled in the Master of Public Health program at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. She received a B.A. in Psychology from Carleton College in Northfield, MN and went on to work with at-risk youth in the San Francisco Bay Area. Prior to starting her public health education, Carrie was involved in community health outreach at a San Francisco high school wellness center. She is interested in studying a wide spectrum of youth risky behaviors and interventions.

Dr. Kuo is a social demographer of health and social inequality and holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her expertise includes socioeconomic disparities in health and risk factors (smoking, problem drinking, and obesity), and quantitative methods. Her research includes social and demographic determinants of smoking behaviors; changes in public opinions and attitudes toward smoking bans; and racial disparities in smoking behaviors and attitudes.
